First Coral Reef Cleanup Programme Conducted by Contestants of a State-Level Beauty Pageant (17 Contestants; 3-Hour Programme, Depth of 3 – 10 Metres; Satang Island Kuching; 8 September 2026)
The recognition acknowledges a conservation initiative that brought 17 Miss Sarawak Tourism 2026 contestants to Satang Island, Kuching, where they completed a three-hour coral reef cleanup programme at depths ranging from 3 to 10 metres on 8 September 2026.
The programme connected tourism, environmental responsibility and youth participation, reinforcing the idea that tourism ambassadors can play a role not only in promoting destinations, but also in helping protect them.
More Than a Pageant
Organised by Embrace Borneo Sdn Bhd, Miss Sarawak Tourism 2026 was developed as a platform that extends beyond the conventional pageant stage.
Under the theme “The Face of Sarawak Tourism,” the programme was developed as a Tourism Ambassador development platform, bringing together elements of tourism, culture, heritage, youth talent development, communication, creativity, and the promotion of Sarawak.
Its activities incorporate tourism, culture, heritage, community engagement and responsible tourism, giving contestants practical experiences connected to the destination they represent.
Conservation at Satang Island
The coral reef cleanup formed part of a conservation tourism initiative with the Sarawak West Coast Diving Club.
Alongside the underwater cleanup, participants were exposed to marine biodiversity, beach conservation and responsible tourism.
By taking contestants into a real conservation environment, the programme demonstrated that representing a destination also carries a responsibility to understand and help preserve its natural heritage.
A Milestone Moment of Recognition
The ASIA Records recognition was officially presented on 12 September 2026 during the Miss Sarawak Tourism 2026 Grand Final at the Riverside Majestic Hotel, Kuching.
The recognition was received by Ms. Joeyce Hii, Director of Miss Tourism Sarawak 2026, and witnessed by Guest of Honour YB Datuk Snowdan Lawan.
The presentation formed part of the Grand Final programme, which later culminated in the crowning of Ng Ka Sing of Stampin as Miss Sarawak Tourism 2026, Jazlyn Kali Garden as Miss Sarawak Tourism Metropolitan 2026, and Angelyn of Lawas as Miss Sarawak Tourism Global 2026.
The recognition marked an important milestone in the programme’s efforts to connect tourism representation with conservation, community involvement and environmental awareness.
Voices of Leadership
Reflecting on the purpose behind Miss Sarawak Tourism 2026, Ms. Joeyce Hii, Director of Miss Tourism Sarawak 2026, shared:
“Tourism is not only about beautiful destinations. It is also about our people, culture, heritage, stories and the experiences we share with the world.
“That is why we developed Miss Sarawak Tourism 2026 not simply as a competition, but as a platform to develop tourism ambassadors. We want our participants to have the confidence, knowledge, character and ability to represent Sarawak locally, nationally and internationally.
“The crown is not simply a symbol of victory. It carries the responsibility of representing Sarawak, our culture and our heritage, and sharing the beauty of Sarawak with the world.”
Her remarks reflect the wider purpose behind the Satang Island conservation initiative, giving contestants first-hand experience of the importance of protecting the environment they may go on to represent and promote.
Promoting Responsible Tourism Across Asia
The ASIA Records recognition reflects a broader approach to tourism representation, one that combines destination promotion with environmental awareness and community responsibility.
Through the Satang Island programme, contestants were given the opportunity to experience marine conservation directly and better understand the relationship between tourism and environmental stewardship.
The initiative reinforces the message that promoting a destination also means recognising the responsibility to help preserve what makes it valuable.
